When the Phone Rings: trailer, cast, plot, and more

Yoo Yeon Seok takes on a more cold-hearted character in this intense drama compared to his popular role as the caring pediatric doctor in Hospital Playlist.

He portrays the politician Paik (sometimes spelt Baek) Sa Eon — the youngest presidential spokesman in Korea. He comes from a prestigious background and spent time as a war correspondent, hostage negotiator, and main announcer.

He entered into a marriage of convenience with Hong Hee Joo (played by Chae Soo Bin of I Am Not A Robot and The Fabulous). She’s a sign language interpreter in court and on television. She also has mutism due to an accident she had when she was little.

For three long years, their marriage was a mere facade, and they lived separate lives. But when Hee Joo is abducted, Sa Eon receives a mysterious phone call. Secrets then begin to unravel, and their lives will never be the same again. Can Sa Eon and Hee Joo share a truly genuine bond or will everything go down in flames before they’re able to do so?

Aside from the main leads, the cast members include Heo Nam Jun as Hee Joo’s college friend Ji Jung U and Jang Gyu Ri as Na Yu Ri, Sa Eon’s admirer and junior announcer in the past.

It’s directed by Park Sang Woo (The Forbidden Marriage) and written by Kim Ji Woon (Melancholia, Doctor John).

When the Phone Rings: first impressions and webtoon

Viewers seem to be pulled into the series for its plot twists and “Wattpad-coded” vibes. It blends multiple addictive tropes such as enemies-to-lovers, contract marriage, a tsundere — meaning someone who initially has a cold personality but is actually warmhearted — male lead, and more.

The series is adapted from the web novel The Number You Have Dialed by Geon Eomul Nyeo. The original version can be found here, and you can check out a translated version here.
