Are your Spidey senses tingling? Multiple news outlets have confirmed that Dakota Johnson will star in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man’s next spin-off, which will feature the character Madame Web. Joining her is Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney, who has also been confirmed for the film in an undisclosed role. FYI: Madame Web will also be the first female superhero in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe!
What is the spin-off about?
Details of the film are pretty lean at the moment. However, a report by Deadline revealed that it will be directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, Life on Mars), while the screenplay will be penned by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Matt and Burk have also written the screenplay for Marvel’s upcoming movie, Morbius, starring Jared Leto.
Who is Madame Web?
According to the comics, Madame Web, whose name is Cassandra Web, is an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis. Johns Hopkins Medicine describes myasthenia gravis as “a chronic autoimmune disorder in which antibodies destroy the communication between nerves and muscle, resulting in weakness of the skeletal muscles.”
Due to this disorder, Madame Web was connected to a life support system that looked like a spider web. As such, she also never actively fought any villains. She is also blind. All things considered, she is still a mutant and possesses “strong psychic and telepathic abilities.”
IGN hypothesised that Dakota will take on Julia Carpenter’s version of Madame Web instead of Cassandra Webb, should she decide to star in the film. Julia Carpenter was introduced to the Marvel Universe in 2010’s Amazing Spider-Man: The Grim Hunt and possesses powers that are similar to Spider-Man’s.
