But first, a little background on this year’s theme. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” pays homage to the late German fashion designer who had stints as a creative director at Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, and, of course, his namesake brand. However, some people are wondering why he was chosen to be the inspiration for this year’s theme when he was controversial for his fatphobic, racist, and misogynistic remarks.

But with his character aside, his work has been well-loved in the fashion industry. So with that, here are the Asian celebs who took inspiration from his work and shone with their stellar outfits at the Met Gala.

1. BLACKPINK’s Jennie

BLACKPINK’s Jennie, AKA Human Chanel to her fans, made her Met Gala debut wearing a vintage Chanel mini dress. It’s a reinterpretation of an outfit from the brand’s Autumn/Winter 1990 collection.

Fun fact: she’s one of Karl Lagerfeld’s last handpicked muses for Chanel.

2. Song Hye Kyo

Song Hye Kyo got us starstruck with her seemingly ageless beauty and her intricately designed blush pink Fendi outfit.

The star had just made headlines over the weekend for her stunning look at the Baeksang Awards (which is like Korea’s version of the Oscars) as well as bagging the Best Actress award for The Glory. We can’t wait to see more of the artist this year!

The legendary Oscar award winner Michelle Yeoh graced the event and wore an elegant Karl Lagerfeld outfit which gave us nothing but queen vibes. She wore a breathtaking black and white ball gown with oversized billowy sleeves.


Chinese singer-songwriter Cai Xu Kun showed up looking like a prince in his Prada attire. He took Karl Lagerfeld’s signature white shirt and black tie and switched it up with his bejewelled attire.


K-pop star from GOT7 and Hong Kong-born rapper-singer Jackson Wang wore a stylish all-black Louis Vuitton outfit from head to toe. He also paid tribute to Karl’s love for black shades and black gloves.
