Hey, Upper East Siders! We’ve been getting piecemeal info about the new generation of Manhattan’s hottest crew in the past couple of months. But finally, after disappearing from our radar for quite some time, there’s new info on HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot. Plus, a couple of series predictions ahead!
Are these our new Derena?
First, the show’s leads Whitney Peak and Eli Brown were recently spotted in New York in full glam, totally looking like Upper East Siders. While there are still no official details at the moment as to whose characters they’re playing based on the original series (or if they will mirror any of them at all!), the two are giving us major Dan x Serena vibes based on their outfits. We’re totally shipping it!
Fitting Gossip Girl in the ‘now’
According to Harper’s Bazaar, the GG reboot takes off eight years after the Gossip Girl website was shut down. With the rise of social media — and the new generation of gossip-worthy New York teenage elites — the drama will resume once more.
It’s quite exciting how things will play off, considering that the TV and film landscape has also changed so much since the original Gossip Girl aired. Re-watching it a few years later after it wrapped up makes one realise that Gossip Girl has a lot of brow-raising themes, which sure made the plot thrilling but are undeniably questionable.
We’re quite curious if our new Upper East Side gang will tackle more ‘woke’ themes in this 10-episode sequel. That’s not to say we’re not up for some petty drama (that is the core of Gossip Girl after all), but to really reflect today’s social climate, there’s bound to be some growth in the narrative, don’t you think?
Cameos will surely happen
Okay, so we don’t have solid proof yet, but what’s a good sequel without one, right? Penn Badgley (a.k.a. Lonely Boy a.k.a. our original Gossip Girl) and Chace Crawford (our charming Nate Archibald) both previously expressed their interest in reprising their roles and we’d love to see it happen.
Of course, a yes from our main girls Blair and Serena (played by Leighton Meester and Blake Lively respectively) would be great, but seeing other notable names from the original Gossip Girl cast — maybe Kelly Rutherford’s Lily Van Der Woodsen or Zuzanna Szadkowski’s Dorota — would be just as good.
