#ICYMI, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have welcomed their first baby together and, according to People, it’s a girl! This sweet news was first revealed on the couple’s respective Instagram accounts on Friday, 21 January. Since then, fans have been speculating the events that led up to this announcement. We attempt to unpack their pregnancy timeline below.
2018: The push
The couple began dating officially in May 2018 and later announced their engagement in August 2018. In October 2018, Priyanka shared with E! News that she needed to “catch up” after witnessing a few of her friends having babies.
A source told Us Weekly then that Priyanka and Nick “have amazing chemistry and can’t wait to have kids.” The couple got hitched on 18 December 2018 and held two wedding ceremonies in India, which took place over the course of five days.
January 2021: The ‘cricket team’
In January 2021, while promoting her film The White Tiger, Priyanka joked in an interview with The Times that she wished to have “a cricket team” when asked to describe the number of children that she wanted. She clarified her response by sharing that she wants children, “as many as” she can have.
November 2021: The roast
Both Priyanka and Nick kept their baby plans tightly under wraps for most of 2021. Priyanka focused on a multitude of projects, including the launch of her haircare brand Anomaly, joining The VS Collective and starring in The Matrix Resurrections. Meanwhile, Nick went on tour with The Jonas Brothers and was a judge on NBC’s The Voice.
Fast forward to November 2021, Priyanka and Nick moved into their home in Los Angeles, California.
Nick also shared a teaser clip of The Jonas Brothers Family Roast on his Instagram. The Netflix special, which was first announced in October, premiered on 23 November. It starred the musical trio, who was ‘roasted’ or made fun of by their celebrity friends, including their wives.
During Priyanka’s ‘roast’ of Nick, the 39-year-old actor shared that they are the “only couple who doesn’t have kids yet.” She teased audiences by revealing that she and Nick were “expecting”, before quickly completing her sentence with “...to get drunk tonight!” Nick initially gave a nervous expression but looked relieved after Priyanka delivered her punchline.
While we are not privy to when the special was filmed, Nick’s reaction could’ve been his fear of Priyanka prematurely sharing details of their surrogacy plans. But the show’s script could’ve been carefully planned too. This possibly meant that the couple’s pregnancy announcement was long in the works — except that fans didn’t know they were in for a ride.
21 January 2022: The reveal
Less than two months later, the lovebirds took to Instagram to share a screenshot (from the iPhone notes app, no less?), which revealed that they are “overjoyed to confirm” that they have “welcomed a baby via surrogate”. This marks their first official step towards building a family (and cricket team?) together, and who knows what other exciting plans are in store for this celebrity couple? Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
