K-drama lovers, get ready for Netflix’s upcoming romance series Twenty Five Twenty One, which is set to premiere on 12 February. It features Start-Up and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo’s Nam Joo-Hyuk alongside Kim Tae-Ri, who is best known for starring in movies including The Handmaiden and Space Sweepers. The series is set in 1998
The series brings us back to the late 1990s, where 22-year-old Back Yi-Jin (played by Nam Joo-Hyuk) and 18-year-old Na Hee-Do (played by Kim Tae-Ri) meet for the very first time. As depicted in the teaser trailer, the couple “called each other by [their] name” then and fell in love three years later at the ages of 25 and 21. The trailer also showed Hee-Do in a school uniform, whereas Yi-Jin was working at a local bookstore.

A second teaser released by tvN shared more details about the series. It revealed Hee-Do as a determined, fencing athlete who isn’t afraid to chase after her dreams. As for Yi-Jin, both teaser videos have yet to reveal much about his background and personality. However, from Netflix’s teaser photo, we see that his character is surrounded by objects such as a microphone, a voice recorder and an office lanyard. This hints at the possibility of him holding a job in a media and broadcasting company.
The series will also revolve around the realities of friendships
While romance will blossom between the two main characters, the series will also spotlight the importance of friendships. We anticipate that not all of the relationships revealed in the series will have a happy ending, though. This is in view of Netflix’s description of the series, which revealed that it will also feature “the story of five young people from 1998 to 2001, who thought they would be together forever.” What changed during those three years? Guess we’ll have to watch the series to find out when it premieres on Netflix on 12 February.
