It's happening: Mario Maurer and Baifern Pimchanok are reuniting in a new movie. The news was confirmed by Pimchanok herself when she posted an Instagram photo of the two of them. A part of the caption roughly translates in English as "...our new movie" and includes the hashtag #lasercandy. Later on, it was revealed that Laser Candy is the title of their new film. A rather strange title, but it sure sounds intriguing!
A Facebook post by Guru Magazine by Bangkok Post reveals the following: "set in the near future where an AI building is powered by human feelings." Due to a software glitch, it continues, "[the AI building] falls in love with a real girl, escapes into the body of a real man, and tries to win her affections." It will be written by Philip Gelatt of Netflix's Love Death & Robots fame. ICYDK, it's a science fiction anthology featuring fresh, out-of-the-box stories. Not to mention, you can be sure the visual effects will be breathtaking. Just think about how Bangkok will look like in a futuristic world.
It's been 10 years since the two starred in the Thai film First Love/Crazy Little Thing Called Love (สิ่งเล็กเล็ก ที่เรียกว่า...รัก), a cutesy rom-com that follows a teenage girl's quest to be noticed by her ultimate crush. Pimchanok played Nam, a dark-skinned, dowdy highschooler who has a big crush on Shone (Maurer's character), the most popular boy in school. After being given the typical heroine makeover — straightened hair, no more glasses, fairer skin and better clothes — she's finally noticed by the whole school and soon became popular, too. But spoiler alert, it turns out that Shone already likes Nam even before her transformation, he just didn't have the courage to confess.
We know it's a typical story and has all sorts of political incorrectness that's worthy of critique but no one can deny that its relatable charm is hard to replicate. The movie was considered a sleeper hit and gained traction even outside Thailand with Mario Maurer and Baifern Pimchanok building fanbases in Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and more. Thanks to Crazy Little Thing Called Love, both stars became household names and went on to have bigger projects including having roles in a Filipino film Suddenly, It's Magic and Maurer scoring the lead role in horror film Pee Mak, Thailand's highest grossing movie as of date.
Last year, we had a taste of their upcoming reunion when Pimchanok guested on Maurer's Youtube show called OH Lunla! Based on the episode, it's obvious that the chemistry is still alive and well with these two.
Knowing that Mario Maurer and Baifern Pimchanok will be reuniting after all these years is a pleasant surprise. We can't help but hope that it will be sweeter the second time around. *fingers crossed*
