Who’s in the mood for a fashion-forward K-pop comeback? We are! Girls' Generation’s Kim Hyoyeon, who now goes by her moniker DJ HYO, dropped a series of stunning teaser images on her Instagram yesterday evening for the release of her fourth solo single Dessert on 22 July.
Aside from waiting in anticipation for the new track to drop in less than a week’s time, fans were also blown away by Hyoyeon’s fashion-forward look in the teaser visuals and were especially excited to see her return to her brunette roots after having high-maintenance platinum tresses for many years now.
In addition to Hyoyeon’s exciting hair transformation, we’ve also been loving the trend-setting #hyostyle ensembles that she’s been serving on the ‘gram. With that, read on as we round up five style trends to try now, as seen on Hyo-Yeon.
1. Quirky frames
We love our classic cat-eyes and wayfarers but as Hyoyeon has shown us, quirky frames are the way to go if you wish to leave an unforgettable style impression. Fans were quick to ID her futuristic-looking frames, which are by South Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster.
For those of you who are eager to cop the exact same pair of shades worn by Hyoyeon, you’ll have to be a little patient because they are currently unavailable for purchase at the moment. The Circle T WI frames are part of Gentle Monster’s ‘My Mars’ collection and they feature two blue lenses that are joined together by a semicircle to create a three-circle illusion. Another statement-making pair you can consider adding to your ‘drobe are these ones by Miu Miu, which are designed with a glitter pink acetate frame and gradient pink silver mirror lens.
2. Face-framing coloured streaks
Having made platinum blonde hair part of her signature look for many years now, Hyoyeon has become quite the expert in experimenting with different bold hairstyles. In one of her recent looks, Hyoyeon is seen with braided, black-coloured front streaks to match her cool, hip-hop ensemble. Her trendy tresses affirm that face-framing coloured streaks are on-trend once again after they were also worn by BLACKPINK's Jennie in How You Like That.
Beauty creators in the YouTube community have also welcomed the return of this '90s-inspired hair trend by carrying out DIY bleaching experiments from home. If you have boldly pulled the trigger in going full-platinum recently, don’t forget to keep your tresses vibrant and glossy with a blonde-friendly hairstyling product, such as Living Proof’s colour care whipped glaze.
For those of you who are eager to rock this look but aren’t ready to commit to it for the long-term just yet, try easing yourself into it by using Aprilskin’s Turn Up Colour Treatment, a temporary hair dye that lasts up to two weeks. With this, you'd be able to play with different vivid colours before settling on the one that you like the most.
3. Patterned hosiery with shoes combo
Hyoyeon’s minty-fresh outfit shows that pastels are still a hit this season, though we’re particularly interested in her snazzy thigh-high socks and sneakers combo. Although the brand of her white patterned socks remains a mystery for now, we were able to immediately identify her pretty-pink velour Old Skool shoes, which are part of the Sandy Liang x Vans collaboration collection released in February.
Patterned hosiery is a great way to elevate your footwear game without having to splurge big-time on a new pair of sneakers or heels. Embrace Marine Serre’s signature crescent print in the form of leggings and style them with a pair of Dr. Martens. If you have your reservations about pulling off a full printed look, you can also start off with an ankle-length design first, such as these Galaxy mesh socks by Shein.
4. Coloured denim coordinates
Add a little colour to your life with a coloured denim coordinate just like Hyoyeon, who rocked her standout turquoise number from Milan-founded fashion brand MSGM with a pair of mismatched Air Jordan 1 sneakers. This streetstyle-inspired look is not only cool but also comfortable to wear especially on days when you’re not in the mood for feminine skirts and dresses.
Although the exact colour worn by Hyoyeon is no longer available for sale, a similar design in an energetic shade of fuchsia can still be snagged. Fun fact: This made-in-Italy brand is a favourite among many other K-pop stars, including BTS’ Jin and singer Lee Hi. For a more wallet-friendly option, check out Missguided’s lilac denim co-ordinate, which features functional chest pockets and oversized tortoiseshell buttons.
5. Granny florals
This is arguably one of the trickiest trends to adopt, but Hyoyeon’s confidence helps her knock this look straight out of the fashion park. Her head-turning ensemble is by Italian fashion luxury label Off-White, which we believe comprises of a collared long dress and trenchcoat. With the busy granny floral prints on full-display, Hyoyeon kept the rest of her look simple, with sleek, centre-parted locks and minimal makeup.
Ready to attempt this trend? Go luxe by copping yourself a similar-looking Off-White floral print side split dress. This is a much more wearable take on the print, which can be easily dressed up or down with sneakers or stilettos, depending on the occasion. Alternatively, check out Pomelo Fashion’s butterfly sleeves flare dress, which is also a stylish summer-friendly piece with its cut-out details and vibrant floral print.
