Be it food, fashion or films — sometimes, the Italians just do it better. Home to the best espressos, the world's greatest artists and mouth-smacking cuisines, Italy draws in a particularly powerful crowd this time of the month every year due to Milan Fashion Week.
We’re barely halfway through #MFW 2020, which runs till 24 February, however we’ve already been treated to plenty of dramatic, high-fashion moments on and off the runway. The Gucci show was dizzying to say the least (models stood on a rotating runway), while Jil Sander and Max Mara served as a reminder to us all that we should never underestimate the impact of luxurious, classic designs.
Our favourite part about fashion week though is witnessing celebrities from all around the world congregating at the frow of the top runway shows of the season. Think Avengers, but make it fashion. Here are the most powerful looks which we’ve loving thus far:
BLACKPINK Lisa in Prada
Lisa of K-pop girl group BLACKPINK blinded us in the best possible way as she made her high-profile appearance at the Prada Fall/Winter 2020 show. Her gold ensemble consisted of a three-quarter sleeve length jacket with an oversized collar and a matching A-line skirt. For accessories, she wore platform Mary Janes and carried a gold pouch (which stored her trusty camera and snacks — she revealed this tidbit during her takeover of the brand’s Instagram stories prior to the show.)
For the uninitiated, Lisa's get-up may appear a tad conservative, or ordinary even by fashion week standards. Truth is, her look has made a strong impact in helping fans and fellow fashion folk learn about one of the brand’s most iconic designs to date: the ’50s-inspired skirt suit. Speaking of impact, did we also mention that Lisa's Milan Fashion Week debut trended worldwide on Twitter, chalking up over a million tweets with the hashtag #LalisaWearsPrada? Talk about power.
Koki in Fendi
Now, moving on to another Italian luxury fashion house that is known for its baguettes (no, not the French loaf), we’re loving the sweet, Spring vibes which Japanese model and songwriter Koki has brought to the Fendi Fall/Winter 2020 show. Dressed in a cosy cardigan and a floral-printed dress with sheer panels at the knees, Koki also wore two Fendi purses, one of which is so tiny you can barely see it. Thoughts on the white boots? A tough trend to pull off but Koki nailed the look nonetheless.
Koki has been making waves in the fashion scene for awhile now due to her doll-like features and celebrity lineage (her dad’s Takuya Kimura) — she was most recently the face of BAPE and Coach’s limited edition collection and has starred alongside Chinese rapper Kris Wu on the cover of Marie Claire magazine. Her front row appearance is an indication of bigger things to come.
Davikah in Gucci
Our Milan Fashion Week wrap-up wouldn’t be complete without Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2020 show — young female stars including Korean singer IU, Thai actress Davikah Hoorne and American actress Yara Shahidi attended the show and each of them sported drastically different looks.
IU looks picture-perfect in her oversized butterfly collar and sheer blouse, as with Yara giving beauty enthusiasts a run for their money with her trendy wavy baby hairs on display. Our vote though, goes to Davika, who has masterfully carried the Gucci aesthetic from the airport to post-runway.
Our favourite outfit from hers was after the show, when she was all smiles in a floppy hat, a Peter-pan collar blouse worn under a sleeveless knit vest and a leather skirt. She’s also toting the Gucci 1955 Horsebit shoulder bag, which is predicted to become one of the most coveted bag designs for the year.
Amiaya in Emilio Pucci
Many of us won’t be able to tell fashion twins Ami Suzuki and Aya Suzuki apart from each other, but their colourful, cosplay-inspired sense of style is telling of the exuberance and star power that they bring to the fashion circuit.
Sitting frow at Emilio Pucci’s Fall/Winter 2020 show, the Japanese music duo showed up in almost identical outfits, except for their purses. Their grey, cat-eye shades perfectly frame their tiny faces and magenta-coloured locks, while their vertical-striped dresses are reminiscent of old, out-of-signal TV’s.
After recapping on our favourite celebrity looks thus from Milan Fashion Week, we’ve come to realise that Asia’s brimming with fashionable, talented faces who are capable of influencing the lives of fans not just within the region, but beyond as well. Call this the Asian persuasion, perhaps? We’ll leave it to you to decide.
