The Tyrant: trailer, cast, plot, and more

The Tyrant is a spin-off of the movie The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion starring Kim Da Mi. Dealing with mature themes, it’s a blend of mystery and sci-fi sprinkled with lots of action and gore.

The story revolves around different groups trying to secure the last sample from The Tyrant programme — a bioweapon that can give its host supernatural abilities. Director Choe (Kim Seon Ho) instructs his men to secure it. On the other hand, a foreign intelligence agency orders their agent named Paul (Kim Kang Woo) to find it and dispose of it.

In the middle of this game is an engineer named Chae Jagyeong (Jo Yoon Soo) and former agent Lim Sang (Cha Seung Won). All of them are morally ambiguous and have different goals which help make the show an entertaining one.

Is it worth a spot on your watchlist? Here are three reasons why this makes for a compelling series.

1. Kim Seon Ho masterfully depicts the cool but cruel character of Director Choe

The Tyrant is a dark drama — most of the time literally with all the covert operations and shootouts at night. Seon Ho’s fitting performance as Director Choe adds an intriguing layer to the show. In addition to his dialogues having snarky remarks, his character is also level-headed and never fazed by his circumstances. It’s evident that this isn’t his rodeo in the action thriller genre — he previously starred in the noir film The Childe which was also directed by Park Hoon Jung, the same director of The Tyrant.

TheBeauLife had the opportunity to attend the press conference virtually, where we gleaned insights from the main cast and director. It seemed that it was a no-brainer for Seon Ho to take on the role, as he said,  “I love the action and dynamics between the characters.”

2. Jo Yoon Soo steals the show as Chae Jagyeong

Jo Yoon Soo deserves praise for her acting skills in the series. Her character is someone who can crack any code and weasel her way out of the most dangerous situations.

She exudes calmness and confidence in her role, and expertly portrays the persona of a woman who has been hardened by the tough challenges in her line of work. It got us fascinated when we learnt that this is her first leading role. We can’t wait to see more badass characters in her portfolio in the future!

At the press-con for the show, the director also shared, “I believe I have cast each role with actors that were the characters themselves. I know them very well. Members of the cast have such a wide range. No matter what character you bring to them, they will bring it out of them, bring the character to life.”

3. The Tyrant offers an action-packed series at par with Western action shows

The quality production of The Tyrant makes it a show that’s worth your time. We enjoyed the cinematography and the well-choreographed, realistic fight scenes. With just four episodes, the pacing is just right, especially if you’re on the lookout for an adrenaline-filled show that you can easily binge-watch.

The Tyrant: where to watch in Singapore and will there be a Season 2?

All of The Tyrant’s four episodes are now available for streaming on Disney+. We don’t want to give away too much, but it’s unlikely that this show will be renewed for a second season given the ending. That said, there’s room for a prequel and other spin-off stories in the future.
