Your Favourite Fragrances Will Soon Contain Sustainable Ethanol

Look out for them in the coming months

International beauty brand Coty has started its first production run of fragrances that contain sustainable ethanol. What does this mean for you? For starters, you may soon see brands such as Gucci, Burberry, Chloe and Hugo Boss launching new scents or updating their current portfolio of fragrances with this “near-zero water alternative” in the coming months.

What is sustainable ethanol?

Ethanol is commonly found in cosmetic and beauty products and is traditionally derived from sugar cane and sugar beet. It is also Coty’s “top fragrance ingredient by volume.”

Thanks to its scientists, its production partners and carbon recycling company LanzaTech, Coty is now moving towards the use of CarbonSmart ethanol, which is made from recycled carbon and is sourced and purified from industrial carbon emissions. This reduces the need for agricultural land and lowers the total carbon emissions related to fragrance production.
