Style Smart: How To Do Denim-On-Denim Correctly

Is there such a thing as too much denim? The fashion set’s answer to this is a resounding “no” as denim-on-denim outfits continue to trend in 2021 — thanks to Prada’s debut of its 100% certified organic sustainable denim collection, Levi’s 501 Originals campaign with Naomi Osaka, and more.

The most effortless way to embrace denim-on-denim is to don a classic co-ord, which consists of a denim jacket and a pair of jeans. However, consider taking things up a notch just like Korean-American model Irene Kim has by rocking a vest — otherwise known as a waistcoat — in a different shade of blue as your outer piece instead.

Style it: Start with a classic cotton denim jacket. These ones from Mango are regular fit but run one size larger to help its wearer achieve the relaxed, casual look. For your top, Love, Bonito’s Antonella Padded Cropped Top has a tie-front detail just like Michelle’s. But the best part of this? It’s padded, so you can step out comfortably sans bra and still have decent coverage. For bottoms, Michelle went with a pair of cuffed shorts. Alternatively, you can go with a pair with distressed details, like the ones above from premium denim brand Citizens of Humanity. 

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Gossip Girl breakout star Whitney Peak went back to the basics with her Canadian Tuxedo and added a boyish twist to it with her Converse High Top sneakers and white undershirts. (Can we take a moment to appreciate how great she looks in a mullet too?) If playing mix-and-match is too tough of a task for you, you can always stick to this classic combo just like Whitney.

Style it: Go with a design that has the classic details of a denim jacket down pat — such as chest patch pockets, sleeves with cuffs and a relaxed fit. The Ex-Boyfriend Trucker Jacket from Levi’s is pretty much perfect and it’s a piece that you can wear for a long time. For the undershirt, consider the ASOS Design Relaxed Dad Shirt. Then, cap off your ensemble with the Levi’s 314 Shaping Straight Jeans, which are designed to help its wearer achieve a leg-lengthening effect.  

Prada x Pernille = a dream come true. Popular Danish fashion influencer Pernille Teisbaek is the picture of effortless chic in her bra top and jeans from the Italian luxury fashion house’s sustainable denim collection. Her denim attire alone may have come across as a tad too casual, however, her effective use of black statement accessories — comprising a Prada Galleria bag, trending Prada leather loafers and sunnies — instantly elevates her outfit to front row-worthy.

Style it: The coveted bra top and jeans from Prada have mostly sold out by now. Fortunately, the REDValentino Patchwork Denim Bralette is an affordable alternative that you can consider if you wish to re-create Pernille’s outfit. For jeans, go with a darker wash, just like these Mom-Fit Jeans from Mango. For your statement black accessory, simply slip your feet into these Charles & Keith Perline Loafers. Don’t be afraid to accessorise further to showcase your style too, such as with a pair of cat-eye sunnies and a top handle purse.
