12. The Mongol Khan at Sands Theatre
The Mongol Khan at Sands Theatre is an extraordinary production that holds the distinction of being the first Mongolian show to perform outside its homeland. Picture, if you will, a Shakespearean tragedy brought to life by the surreal, physical artistry of Cirque du Soleil, choreographed with the breathtaking precision of Zhang Yimou. The result is a visual and auditory feast — stunning acrobatics, electrifying dance sequences, animated puppetry, and intricate costumes, all accompanied by traditional Mongolian music, ranging from haunting melodies to energetic drum beats.
Set against a backdrop of royal treachery, forbidden love, and the brutal sacrifices made in the quest for the throne, The Mongol Khan, based on a fictional story set within the ancient Hunnu Empire, explores themes as timeless as they are universal. Drawing parallels on The Orphan of Zhao, an ancient Chinese tale of babies swapping, the production weaves a story that is both deeply personal and epic in scale. It's an immersive experience, transporting the audience into a world of power, betrayal, and the emotional complexities of love, greed, and revenge, all heightened by its sweeping theatrical style.
Now playing at Sands Theatre, the show offers two versions: the original Mongolian language and an English version. The Mongolian language version of the show offers an immersive experience that may be occasionally interrupted by the need to glance at side-panel translations (in English and Mandarin). The authenticity of the original language, however, did add a layer of depth to the performance, making it quite a unique encounter.
Address: Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, 10 Bayfront Ave, S 018956
Time: Performance schedule as follows: Tuesdays to Fridays, 8PM Saturdays, 2PM and 8PM Sundays, 1PM and 6.30PM
