Mask Makeup Tutorials That Are Insanely Creative

All about the eyes

Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, recently declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), influencers are turning to mask makeup tutorials to find some levity in the situation. These tutorials range from the practical (which foundation lasts the longest under a surgical mask?) to the creative (glitter brows, anyone?). The latter set heavily features glitter and colour to draw attention to the eyes, with the surgical masks merely being another accessory. Curious to see — or maybe even try — the trend? Ahead are some mask makeup tutorials to check out.

Simple shimmer eyeshadow

You don’t need to go all out to have fun with makeup. This mask makeup look by @_i_am1986_ uses brown eyeshadow in different finishes to create an amplified smokey eye. The fun part comes in the shimmery winged eyeliner that really makes the eyes pop. You can do the same by using a white liquid liner and layer some white or silver glitter eyeshadow (like the Dear Dahlia Paradise Shine Eye Sequins) on top.

Holographic foil

You don’t have to stop at the eyes. There’s so much real estate up there! Try bedazzling your brows with holographic foil or body glitter. @miroslavamoon went for pink and purple foil, which she applied on her brows, eyelids, and across her cheeks à la drunk blush. She then paired the look with a cute panda-themed mask, which is totally kawaii. Try doing your own version of this creative makeup look with the IGK HOUSE PARTY Hair & Body Glitter Stick.

Strategically placed glitter

Instead of placing the glitter on your eyelids, why not try placing it around the eyes? @irisstyle1023 chose to frame her eyes with a generous amount of glitter on the inner corner of her eyes. Then, she used bigger chunks of glitter on her cheekbones. She kept the rest pretty neutral with brown eyeshadow, soft eyeliner, and full brows. You can use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Loose Glitter to achieve the same effect.

Pastel play

For a fun, all-matte look, take a cue from @ambertravellife. She used an array of pastel eyeshadows, merging the light pink with the light blue eyeshadow, creating a nice watercolour effect. Give this youthful rendition a go by using a pastel-themed palette like the new Huda Beauty Pastels Obsession Eyeshadow Palette.

Negative space eyeliner

For another subtle yet playful look, professional makeup artist Sol Kim played with negative space and colour. She used a combination of peach and pink eyeshadows on the inner portion of her eyelids and used the same eyeshadow to line her lower lashline. Then she used a soft black eyeliner (that matches her surgical mask) to create a sharp wing, but left it unfilled. Try Shu Uemura’s Calligraph:Ink Eyeliner when you do this yourself.

With the new kind of French manicure, you can play with glitter and colour on your nails too.
