Goodbye, Bucket Bags! Balloon Bags Are In.

Up in the air with this bag trend

The cat’s out of the bag — bucket bags are about to take a backseat as we make way for the balloon bag trend. "What’s the difference between a bucket bag and a balloon bag?" You may ask. Well, the differences are fairly subtle but for starters, balloon bags typically feature a rounder, less angular shape and they close up with a much narrower opening at the top to secure your belongings. On the other hand, popular bucket bag designs, such as the ones offered by Celine and Staud feature a much wider opening and a more uniform width.

First spotted on the Spring/Summer 2020 catwalk of Spanish luxury brand Loewe, the balloon bag (trend) is bound to blow up very soon — before then, take a closer look at the various iterations of this emerging bag trend by Isabel Marant, Ulla Johnson and more. Plus, scroll through to discover up-and-coming label Gepherrini’s playful iteration of the balloon bag which has almost has us floating on air.

Balloon Small Bag, price unavailable (loewe.com)

Balloon bags are nothing new to Loewe — the label, helmed by Ireland-born designer Johnathan Anderson, had debuted its original iteration of the bag during its Spring/Summer 2019 show. The bag featured an open bucket shape, along with an asymmetrical top handle and a rectangular base. Thoughtful touches and updates were then made to it, all while retaining its signature anagram and luxurious leather craftsmanship.

Available in three sizes, the label’s new balloon bag is made from robust calf leather and soft napa calfskin. The smallest size comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, while the medium and large versions have a shorter handle and a longer strap to allow for more ways to carry it.

The medium, black-and-tan calfskin model is currently available exclusively on the label’s online site, and more colours and sizes will reach stores on 13 February. Two-tone variations will also be launched on 27 February, so stay tuned to their site for the latest updates.
