'Batgirl’ Casts Filipina-American Actress Ivory Aquino As First Major Transgender Character

Coming soon to HBO Max in 2022

Folks, meet Batgirl’s bestie, Alysia Yeoh. She is the first openly transgender character to star in a live-action DC Comics feature film and will be played by trans Filipina-American actress Ivory Aquino.

According to IGN, Alysia is a bartender who made her first appearance in Batgirl Vol.4 #1 in November 2011. The site also shared that Aquino’s casting was teased by actress Leslie Grace on Instagram Stories. Leslie, who will play Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl, posted a photo of herself and Aquino with the caption “Barbara and Alysia.”

Ivory is best known for starring in Netflix’s American drama mini-series Tales of the City and ABC’s mini-series When We Rise, which sheds light on the gay rights movement in America.

She joins co-stars J.K. Simmons, who will play Barbara’s father, Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon; Brendan Fraser as supervillain Garfield Lynns/Firefly, and Michael Keaton, who will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Details of the film’s plot have yet to be announced. However, a report by Nerdist suggests that it will cover Batgirl’s origin story. According to IMDb, the film is in production and is expected to arrive on HBO Max this year.
